Why NLP?

So what is your interest in NLP? See NLP is one of those technologies that appeals to a wide range of people with a wide range of uses. Anything from something as simple as getting over a phobia. To wanting to communicate better with your children. Even so far as to the unfortunate use of seducing woman. I suppose you could also say seducing men.

This is where some people feel that NLP might be manipulative. That is an interesting word. Doesn’t a chiropractor manipulate? How about persuade? Persuasion seems to be an ok word. Although doesn’t it mean the same thing?

The great thing about NLP the L being Linguistic is it is very interesting to watch, listen to, get a good feeling for how people use their words. To really study them. What I tell people is NLP is caring enough about the other person you are talking to to understand how they communicate. And to use that to get the greatest level of communication between them.

So, why are you interested in NLP? What is your interest in a NLP Training?

So what does C>E mean? In our branch of NLP we talk about empowering people. We talk about where most people choose to live their lives. Most people choose to live their lives on the effect side of the equation. What do I mean. I think the best way to explain it is with an example.

I know someone who used to be extremely skinny. Not unhealthy, just very skinny. This individual is now at least 100 lbs overweight. She tells people all the time it is because of her thyroid. She even used the quote “There is nothing I can do about it.” After listening to this for quite some time, I did some research into the Thyroid issue. Turns out the thyroid is responsible for a weight gain of approximately 5-10 lbs. Not the 100 lbs this person claims. Now because this person CHOOSES to live on the effect side of the equation there is nothing for her to do, it is not her fault. When in reality she refuses to exercise and eats desserts all the time. Her eating is attrocious. But see, if it is not her fault and she has no control over it, why change?

Now other people in the same situation, decide that means I have to be that much more careful about what I eat. And I need to make sure I get up and move. I need to start some sort of exercise program. This person CHOOSES to live at cause. This person CHOOSES to be empowered.

Now I don’t even know if the C>E equation is true. I do know however that I am much more empowered and much happier if I live as I am the cause. If there is something in my life I don’t like. I simply make another decision.

Hopefully, you won’t need to take a NLP training to choose to live at Cause.

What does Success mean to you?

I have been doing a lot of reading lately on different topics. But the main one that seems to keep coming up is the topic of SUCCESS. This is a very interesting word in the NLP community. See success mean different things to different people. At one of my recent weekend NLP trainings I conducted I was asked an interesting question.

I told everyone my purpose was to help people become who they were meant to be and NLP, Time Line Therapy(R), and Hypnosis were the fastest way’s I knew how to do that. Someone came up to me and questioned then if that was the truth “How many people can you really help when you charge what you do?” In case you couldn’t guess my hourly rate is not inexpensive. Although, when you get the results you are looking for I feel it is down right cheap.

It was interesting though because this person had put their values and beliefs on me. They felt I was excluding most people by charging my rate. We have a different definition of helping people, as well as what success is.

Some people feel the only measure of success is money. Some feel the only measure of success is how much you sacrifice. Some have varying degrees thereof. My question to you is…what does SUCCESS mean to you? Specifically! None of the vague terms, none of the cliches. What does SUCCESS mean to you? When you can answer that in the way a 3rd grader could understand it you will have taken a major step towards achieving it. That is presupposing of course you don’t already have it.

NLP

So my journey had begun. I took my first official NLP training in March of 04. What an amazing week it was. Before the course there was a 20 cd pre-study set to listen to as well as 3 books to read. When I got to the training it was very intense. The great thing was not only was I learning all these great patterns I was going through them myself. I had a tremendous shift from that week. From there I couldn’t get enough I then took a nlp sales course. It had been rated one of the #1 sales courses in the country. Very cool.

I knew this is what I wanted to do, what I was meant to do. The funny thing is people think the only reason to take a NLP course is if they want to do therapy or NLP coaching. While that is definitely one aspect NLP is so much more.

Think of it this way. NLP is the art and science of communication. So who is NLP for? It is really for anyone who is looking to communicate more effectively with not only themselves but other people as well.

I left you in Orlando 2001. What I experienced that weekend was unbelieveable. Tony was great, but that’s not what I am talking about. See all of Tony’s seminar and techniques have their basis in NLP. Tony has changed the name from Neuro Linguistic Programming to Neuro Associative Conditioning. But when you get down to it, it is the same stuff. Packaged differently. I fell in love with NLP right then and there. 3 weeks later I was at another event. This one 5 1/2 days long. I was hooked. And then, just like before I let life get in the way, to some extent. I still put myself in situations to learn about once a quarter I would get out to some sort of event. But I didn’t make the shifts in my own life.

This is where things didn’t make sense, well at least to me. It wasn’t until I moved myself from the effect side of things to the cause side of things, that things really changed. I’ve mentioned cause and effect before. I think I will have to write a blog about it. Look for that in the upcoming days. Till next time…

People ask me all the time…”What is NLP?”

As if that is an easy question to answer. Sure, sure. There are the typical answers, NLP is the study of excellence. NLP is a trail of techniques. NLP is the study of how the language of the mind affects the nervous system. While these are all great definitions, I find I still get the old blank stare after I answer. So let me try it this way.

Do you remember when you were a child? When you thought you could do anything, be anything, and accomplish anything you wanted. Think back to that time now. Go back to that time, see what you saw, hear what you heard, and really feel the feelings of being able to accomplish anything. When there were no limits.

What NLP does is it helps you get back to those feelings again. It eliminates all the ”reasons”. And allows you to move from being at the effect of the world, to the cause of your world.

That’s my purpose here. I believe in empowering people. My hope is you choose to move from the effect side of the equation to the cause side.

Why…

It happened in about 1991. I read a book by Anthony Robbins. Well, sort of. I bought the book Awaken the Giant Within. There were several references to a previous book by Anthony Robbins. So I stopped reading the Giant…and went and purchased Unlimited Power. After reading that book, I felt like I had to know more. I made a decision I had to get to one of Tony’s seminars. Then like so many other people in the world, I let life get in the way. So fast forward to 1999. It is getting to the end of the milenium. 2000 is a fresh start, so in order to get a fresh start I bought Anthony Robbins’ Personal Power II a 30 day tape set. I am one of the few people who bought a tape set and then used it. My wife and I did the whole 30 days. It was great. And at the end of it, guess what? I said I have got to get to one of Tony’s seminars.

Fast forward again now to December 2001. I own my own business. I am successful in the business by most people’s standards and yet I am not happy or fulfilled. I don’t know if you can relate to that or not. But I was not happy. My marriage was terrible. My finances…yeah. So there I sat one day in front of a computer and I said, you know what I know Tony comes to Chicago (I was living in Iowa at the time). I am going to look at his website and see the next time he is going to be local. This was a Wednesday. He was in Orlando that weekend. I said I am doing this. So my wife and I headed to Orlando on a moments notice. And this is where this particular journey begins.
